Firefighter Corey Comperatore tragically lost his life during an incident described by Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro on Sunday as an attempted assassination targeting former President Donald Trump. Comperatore was among the attendees at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, held as part of Trump’s 2024 reelection campaign. According to the governor, Comperatore died while shielding his family from harm.
The assailant, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was swiftly neutralized by Secret Service agents at the scene. The FBI is currently investigating the incident as an assassination attempt.
In a heartfelt statement, Governor Shapiro conveyed condolences to Comperatore’s family, highlighting his dedication as a firefighter and his deep ties to his community. Shapiro also noted Comperatore’s enthusiasm for supporting the former president.
Flags have been ordered to fly at half-staff in honor of Comperatore, who is remembered as a hero for his selfless actions during the rally. The incident resulted in one fatality and left two others critically injured, with former President Trump sustaining a minor injury.
