London (AP) — Tottenham kicked off their post-Harry Kane era with an entertaining 2-2 draw against Brentford in the Premier League on Sunday.
All four goals were netted in a thrilling first half that offered a glimpse of Tottenham's new identity without their star striker, now with Bayern Munich, under the guidance of new manager Ange Postecoglou.
In a match that showcased a different tactical approach compared to the defensive discipline and counterattacking strategy of former coach Antonio Conte, Tottenham controlled possession and managed to convert their only two shots on target in the opening half. However, they found themselves trailing 2-1 due to defensive lapses.
Although the tempo slowed down after halftime, the initial 45 minutes of Postecoglou's tenure revealed a distinct departure from previous tactics. The result, a draw against Brentford, could be seen as a positive initial step, considering Brentford's strong home record against top teams like Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool last season.
Tottenham seized the lead when James Maddison's perfectly executed free kick was met by Cristian Romero's header in the 11th minute. Unfortunately for Romero, he was forced off due to a potential concussion after a prior clash of heads.
Brentford equalized through a penalty after Son Heung-min made minimal contact with Mathias Jensen in the box, allowing Bryan Mbeumo to convert from the spot. Tottenham's defensive frailties were exposed once again on the counterattack in the 36th minute, as Rico Henry's cross found Yoane Wissa, whose deflected shot eluded Tottenham's new goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario.
Just before halftime, Emerson Royal leveled the score for Tottenham with a well-taken shot from outside the box, benefiting from another Maddison assist.
Tottenham's new forward, Richarlison, tasked with filling the void left by Kane, was kept relatively quiet but managed a second-half attempt that was saved by Mark Flekken.
Flekken started in goal in place of David Raya, who is anticipated to finalize a transfer to Arsenal.
