Tampa Bay Rays' Shortstop Takes Break Amid Inquiry
The Tampa Bay Rays have reported that Wander Franco, their All-Star shortstop, opted to sit out of recent and upcoming games against the Giants and Angels. The decision comes in the midst of a Major League Baseball investigation into "social media posts" related to Franco. Despite speculation surrounding the reason for his absence, Rays' manager Kevin Cash emphasized that Franco's absence was simply a scheduled day off.
During the team's game on Sunday, the Rays were made aware of circulating social media posts concerning Wander Franco. In response, the Rays expressed their seriousness about the situation and their cooperation with Major League Baseball's ongoing investigation.
Following the game, Manager Kevin Cash reiterated that Franco's absence was solely due to a planned day off and declined further comment on the matter.
In a subsequent announcement, the Rays disclosed that Franco and the team have agreed mutually for him to be placed on the Restricted List and take a leave from the Club for the duration of the current road trip, with the Rays' next home game scheduled for August 22.
The team expressed support for the league's efforts to comprehend the situation and confirmed that there would be no further commentary.
Numerous sources, including MLB.com, The Athletic, and The Tampa Bay Times, reported that the investigation was linked to allegations on social media involving Franco and an inappropriate relationship. Franco responded dismissively in a social media video, denying the allegations and expressing frustration at the baseless accusations.
Wander Franco, 22, has been a prominent player for the Rays for three seasons and earned his first All-Star appearance this year. He has achieved a batting average of .281 with 17 home runs and 30 stolen bases.
This season, Franco was previously benched for two games in June due to unspecified disciplinary reasons. Manager Kevin Cash stated that Franco's handling of his frustrations did not align with the team's expectations of good sportsmanship.
In 2021, the Rays made a significant investment in Franco's future, signing him to an unprecedented 11-year, $182 million contract despite his limited experience in the major leagues.
Although the Rays are currently second in the American League East, trailing the Baltimore Orioles by three games, they are well-positioned to secure one of the three wild card spots in the American League.
